when i grow up ...

When I was five my dad was stylist to the Tiller Girls when their dance show came to our city. Tiller Girls had to be over 5’10”; had to be able to kick their noses with their shins while retaining beautiful, permanently etched smiles; and had to travel all over the world. I looked up at my dad and asked, “If you’re 6’4”, will I grow up to be over 5’10”?”

When I was nine my mom took me to a movie about the mother of “modern dance”.
Known as much for her flamboyant lifestyle as for her progressive dance, Isadora Duncan was an adventurer, revolutionist, passionate defender of the free and artistic spirit. And she danced all over the world. I looked up at my mother and asked, “Will you be sad if I grow up and dance all over the world?”

When I was 11, I worked at a famous theatre whose stage has held many of the all time greats from Olivier to Dame Judy Dench. I got to sit in the best box office seats during final dress rehearsals, hang back stage with the actors, and play with props and wardrobe. I looked up at my parents and asked, “When I grow up … ?”

Well, folks, I’m all grown up, so cue the music, BLAST the speakers, and look at me now!

I grew up to be over 5'10", took ballet for 5 years and have been constantly exposed to the Beautiful Theatre People through my dancer/dance instructor/choreographer uncle (Terence Stamp even sat on a cheese sandwich in my car once) but never had the urge, except during the '80s and was desperate for any kind of a paying gig when teaching jobs were scarce. One 12 hour day on a set as a stand-in was enough for me -- though I did get to chat briefly with Tim Curry which was a huge highlight. (How many more names can I drop in one comment...? :)

Sorry to hear about your friend. Very sad indeed. Happy New Year, Vicki. Looking forward to more great writing in 2007!

One more thing -- I spent a wasted hour doing the dancing elf thing on other people's photos. Tons-of-fun.

LOL ... Andrea, I loved Tim Curry when I met him; he was an absolute riot. Glad you had fun 'elfing' other people. It cracks me up ;-) HNY!!

... PS ... I made 5'10" but not an inch more (I'm the titch in my family ;-)

But you're taller than your extended family! (If you're reading this, V or A, I'm jealous -- you can shop at 'normal person' shops.) And PS Tim Curry was funny when I chatted with him, too. Terence Stamp definitely wasn't.

... that's 'cos he sat on a cheese sandwich! Squashed cheese sarnies do that to people.

So Bibi how tall are you? Wow! Andrea is 5'10". Well I heard from someone she is very tall and beautiful. Either way both of you are taller than me but you won't believe this: Once I was in an elevator. There were three Caucasian men and 2 caucasian women. At 5'4" I was the tallest plus I was wearing high heeled shoes so probably I was 5'5 and 1/2". It was a great feeling. It does not happen often.

I have to catch up in reading your blog Bibi.

Oh I see you are 5'10! from your comment above.

Oh Bibi..I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up.

(I ordered off the senior menu at dinner tonight and had to swallow my pride)

I don't want to grow up. I would like to be taller.

Ces ... my brother says good things come in small packages and he's been with his lovely wee Scots lass for almost 30 years! (Of course he's MUCH older than me ;-)

Pamela ... ouch, BUT they start the 'senior' thing much earlier in the States than they do in other countries, so don't let them box you in.

Mist1 ... they say the great man/woman retains his/her child-heart and I believe that.

Kiyotoe, hope you hit the film jackpot this year!

Yaz, you're lovely as you are so why waste dreams on something you can't change ;-) I wanted to be a pirate ... but that's not going to happen either, LOL.

LOL...I just long to reach the top shelves in the cupboard without a stepstool!

I always wanted to be a writer, and here I am just that, so my vision at 3 years old became a reality. But taller...that would be just a tad more fun, I think. *grins*

What is it with all you West Coast Amazons? Is everyone out there 5-10?

Great moves, Bibi the Elf. And great setup to the big finale!

Sorry, too, about your friend. She sounds like she was one hell of a person.

Petek- and may all your dreams come true, too. HNY.

Msugal86- right back at you! ;-)

Mikeym- well I was actually looking for a pixie outfit, but thought elf was close enough (it's the Cornish in me).

Keshi- and to you too! Have a fab year ;-)
